Weller 12 Year Wheated Bourbon
One of the grand-daddies of hype, desired by all that drink bourbon — Weller. And not just any Weller, but the sleek, black beauty 12 year. Same recipe and distillery as the fabled Old Rip and Pappy Van Winkle lines, just a little cheaper and slightly more accessible.
Made from Buffalo Trace’s single wheated bourbon mashbill, this stuff is in good company categorically. Maker’s Mark, Larceny, Wyoming Whiskey, Old Elk, and even Finger Lakes Distilling are other notable wheated bourbons. Though few reach the same level of adoration and desire for. And none reach the same pathetically hyper-inflated black market values.
So, is this truly worth the hype or the inflated prices? Well, I guess that depends on how it tastes.
Caramely up front with baked apple and soft spice. Opens a bit into vanilla and nut oil. Very reminiscent of pecan pie. A slight astringency is present through the entire experience.
It’s damn good whiskey, but admittedly I don’t think it lives up to the hype surrounding it. I also think that its worth in dollars does not exceed MSRP.
That being said, it’s all a matter of preference and perspective. I think there are a lot of better values and better whiskies readily available. But this might be your favorite of all time and worth every penny at a multiple of MSRP.
This was not a completely objective review as it was not done blind. I was aware of what I was drinking at the time of drinking it. The bottle was purchased by myself and was not provided by Sazerac for review.
